Iran maps attack on rebel forces

TEHRAN—The Iranian Security Council met Tuesday to study means of countering intensified attacks by opposition Mujaheddin guerrillas -launched from bases in the Iraq-Iran border area.

The Islamic Republic News Agency said the meeting, chaired by Interior Minister AIi-Akbar Mohtashami, had worked out a plan to counter the hit-and-run incursions, which it charged were carried out by “U.S. mercenaries.”

In Baghdad, the headquarters of the Mujaheddin’s armed wing, the Iran Liberation Army, a statement described the Tehran meeting as a clear admission of the “unprecedented rise” in its cross-border attacks in recent weeks.

It said at least 4,300 Iranian Revolutionary Guard soldiers had been killed or wounded and 375 others taken prisoner in 94 offensives launched this year by the Iran Liberation Army.
