Iraqi prominent political leader finds PMOI role in Iraq positive

August 09, 2007

NCRI - Dr. Adnan al-Doleimi, the General Secretary of the Iraqi People’s Congress and the head of the Iraqi Accord Front, a major political movement with a large number of seats at the Iraqi Parliament, rejected claims against the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) by the Iraqi Prime Minister Noori Al-Maliki on the eve of his visit to Tehran this week.

Speaking to Iraqi News Agency on August 7, he said: “The PMOI is definitely not a terrorist organization and is neither a threat to Iraq nor Iran or any other country.”

He added: “Members of the PMOI continue to enjoy the political refugee status in Iraq and we strongly call on the government to change its attitude towards this organization and refrain from exerting any pressure on them.”

Dr. Doleimi reiterated: “To our view, the activities of the PMOI in Iraq is absolutely constructive and has no negative impact on the security of Iraq, not even slightest. The fact is that the PMOI is the political opposition of the Iranian regime and is campaigning for democracy which is an absolutely legitimate demand in the present international circumstances and this organization has no link to terrorism.”

A number of other prominent political leaders in Iraq and distinguished western political dignitaries have also denounced Maliki’s remarks against the PMOI and described it as an attempt to please the clerical regime in Iran.
