al-Sharq al-Awsat, December 7, 2007 – More than 200 Iraqi tribal leaders demanded the closure of the Iranian embassy in Baghdad and its consulates all over Iraq. They condemned the Iranian regime's terrorist presence in Iraq.
Iraqi Tribal Council in a statement the was issued on Thursday and published by the German news agency, DPA, declares: "On Wednesday more than 200 tribal leaders and directors of national tribal associations from 15 Iraqi provinces attended a extraordinary session of the Council. The attendees demanded an end to the Iranian terrorist presence and its proxies in Iraq. They also declared their support for the presence of the Iranian opposition, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in Iraq. They stated that they consider PMOI's presence an impediment to the Iranian regime’s interference in Iraq and its export of fundamentalism and terrorism.
The statement added that the Iraqi Tribal Council also supports the ruling by the British court to remove the PMOI from the terrorist list and eliminate all the limitations forced on them. The statement reads: The removal of PMOI from the terrorist list means an end to the appeasement policy towards the Iranian regime which is the primary enemy of the Iraqi people.
Furthermore, The Iraqi Tribal Leaders supported the recent statement signed by 300,000 Shiites from southern Iraq in which they denounced the meddling of Iran in Iraqi affairs and held the government in Tehran responsible for the violence and sectarian bloodshed where tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis have been victimized and 4 million have left the country.
The Iraqi Tribal Council was established after the American attack in March 2004. The goal of the Council is to gather the Iraqi tribes into an organized and goal oriented establishment to protect their historic and fundamental heritage. Also, to activate their participation in the political process, in view of the fact that the tribes have an extensive and effective role in the Iraqi society. Other goals of this Council include the return of the Iraqi society to social and economic development in which Iraq has lost tremendously.
